Old Time Fiddle with Janie Rothfield

Janie will focus on the all important rhythm and melodic techniques to help you add musicality, expression, rhythm, drive and fun to your playing. Throughout the class you will learn not only fabulous tunes in a variety of tempo’s, rhythms, and melody but also how to make those tunes your “own”, how to pick up a tune on the fly, chords and how to play back up or accompaniment for a song. These classes will help you find and develop your own musical old time voice.

Janie will teach tunes from a variety of traditional sources and regions, listening to the old recordings and get a feel for where the music came from. She will also teach you a few of her own original tunes!

MATTHEW SABATELLA-Clawhammer and Finger Style Banjo, Old Time Singing and more!

Matthew will share techniques, ideas, and inspiration to breathe new life into your playing. Concepts include rhythm patterns, bass runs, playing up the neck, connecting chords, finding the melody, counter melody, and harmony. Matthew's approach developed through more than 20 years of playing and studying the techniques of the masters. He teaches privately and has been on staff at Blue Ridge Old Time Music Week and Sunshine State Acoustic Music Camp. He has won multiple blue ribbons in Florida state banjo competitions.

With vocals, guitar, and banjo, Matthew Sabatella connects people with music that is woven into the fabric of the United States. He performs regularly, both as a solo artist and as the leader of the Rambling String Band. For nearly two decades, he has followed the threads of traditional folk song, revealing a tapestry of music created by American colonists, pioneers, sailors, lumberjacks, immigrants, ’49ers, farmers, mountaineers, slaves, soldiers, cowboys, railroaders, factory workers, and activists. In his solo performances, Sabatella tells his own story of discovery while digging deep into his repertoire of folk, bluegrass, old-time country, fiddle tunes, Appalachian music, ragtime, blues, spirituals, railroad and cowboy songs, work songs, sea shanties, Old World ballads, and more.

Back-up Guitar with Allan

This class is for intermediate level guitarists who know their basic chords (G,D,A,C,Am, Em) and are ready to dive deeper into boom -chuck rhythm, more complex bass runs, and some alternative chords, too.

Allan will review the basics of pick technique, rhythmic strumming and dynamics to support the lead instruments, using simple, first position chords and the “boom & chuck”. Then on to bass runs, how and when to do them to connect to the chord changes and whats happening with the rhythm and melody of the tune.

No music theory is required, just the ability to count from 1 to 8, and knowing the alphabet from A up to G!

You will also learn techniques and strategies to pick up tunes on the fly, and express yourself musically while having fun in the process!  Allan has developed an approach  that looks at the simple process of taking some of the chord shapes you already know ( the "cowboy Chords") in first position and moving them up the neck.  This gives a quick and easy pathway to developing alternative chord/bass patterns to accompany tunes.
